Individual writing awards

  • Reporter of the Year (2013) Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards, for my year-long investigation into railway safety in the City of Waterloo following a freight train derailment in October 2012 — months before the derailment and explosion in Lac-Mégantic, Que.

    Judge Julie McCann — "Dogged, tenacious stuff. With railway safety in Canada an ongoing concern, Jackson deserves praise for committed reporting in pursuit of the public's right to know."
  • First — Best arts story (2016) Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards, for A New 'Leaf' on Life, about a local bonsai expert and how the delicate trees changed his life.

    Judge Christine van Reeuwyk praised the layout and photography of the piece, along with the writing — "What made it stand out is the unusual story, well told. Sharing one man's tale of the hobby that changed his life and backing it up with research and a local group available to readers gives it added relevance to the community."
  • First — Best heritage story (2015) Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards, for Shifting Focus, detailing local efforts to preserve mid-century modern buildings in Waterloo Region.

    Judge Cameron Orr — "Touching story of a family’s aftermath of losing their mother overseas in an earthquake, it really brought home the local impact of an international event. The story was well-written and tugged at the heartstrings. It’s a story I’ll certainly never forget."
  • Second — Best investigative news story (2014) Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards, for my three-part series No place like home, detailing the looming affordable housing crisis for seniors.

    Judge Andrew Holota — "A well-researched piece on seniors' housing ... James Jackson used multiple voices and sources, combined with good use of narrative elements."
  • Second — Best in-depth reporting (2014) Local Media Association Awards, for No place like home
  • Second — Best environmental coverage (2014) Local Media Association Awards, for Adjusting to the new normal, detailing the difficulty the City of Waterloo will experience trying to upgrade its infrastructure in response to climate change and more intense storm events.

     
  • Third — Best environmental writing (2014) Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards, for Adjusting to the new normal 

    Judge Stephen Cogan — "In this well-reported and well-designed package, reporter James Jackson alerts readers to the potential for tangible effects (of climate change) in their own community. Global issue, well localized."
